We specialize in repairing popular Luther Goddard collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The L. Goddard key-wind pocket watch was inspired by the traditional English and European watches of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Luther Goddard brought this established style of watchmaking to America, producing key-wound, verge-fusee pocket watches in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, while working toward the ambitious goal of creating watches domestically rather than relying entirely on imported timepieces.

We know that your Luther Goddard watch is important to you and understand that the sentimental value more often than not outweighs the monetary value. Our expert watchmakers strive to make sure your watch can be worn for many years to come.

The L. Goddard pair-case pocket watch was inspired by the English watchmaking tradition of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when watches were commonly protected by two cases—an inner case holding the movement and an outer case providing added protection. Luther Goddard adapted this established European design while pursuing his pioneering effort to manufacture watches in America.

The L. Goddard Shrewsbury pocket watch grew from Luther Goddard’s ambition to establish watchmaking in America rather than depend on finished imported watches. Working in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, in the early 1800s, Goddard drew heavily on established English watchmaking methods, particularly verge-fusee construction, while helping lay the groundwork for the American watch industry that would develop later in the century.

The L. Goddard silver-cased pocket watch was inspired by the English and European pocket watches popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when silver was commonly used for durable, attractive watch cases. Luther Goddard adapted this traditional style for his early American watches, combining familiar European craftsmanship with his pioneering effort to establish watch production in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

The L. Goddard verge-fusee pocket watch was inspired by the English watchmaking tradition that dominated during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Luther Goddard adopted the proven verge escapement and fusee system used in many English watches, adapting these established techniques as part of his ambitious effort to manufacture pocket watches in America rather than rely entirely on imported timepieces.

HISTORY OF LUTHER GODDARD

The Legacy of Luther Goddard: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Luther Goddard was one of the earliest pioneers of American watchmaking, producing watches in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, in the early 1800s. Drawing on English watchmaking traditions, he made key-wind verge-fusee pocket watches at a time when most watches in America were imported.

Goddard produced relatively few watches, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce today. His legacy lies in helping establish watchmaking in America decades before companies like Waltham and Elgin brought large-scale production to the industry.
