The San Jose Watch Company was founded in 1891 in San Jose, California, after acquiring the Otay Watch Company’s equipment. The company aimed to establish a West Coast watchmaking industry by producing high-quality American pocket watches to compete with brands like Waltham and Elgin, but financial difficulties quickly ended production.

Despite its brief existence and production of fewer than 100 known movements, San Jose pocket watches are among the rarest American timepieces ever made. Today, they are prized by collectors for their rarity and their unique place in early California and American watchmaking history.
