Shanghai Watch Factory, established in 1955, grew from China’s postwar effort to build an independent domestic watch industry, producing one of the nation’s first mass-produced mechanical wristwatches with the A581 in 1958. Designed for China’s expanding workforce, Shanghai watches became symbols of industrial progress and technological self-sufficiency, offering accessible alternatives to imported European timepieces.

As production expanded through the 1960s and 1970s with models like the A611, A623, and 1120, the factory helped standardize domestic movements prior to the Tongji era. Despite the quartz revolution and rising global competition, Shanghai produced millions of mechanical watches that remain valued today for their durability and historical role in modern Chinese horology.
