Eterna, founded in 1856 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by Josef Girard and Urs Schild, began as a small watch movement manufacturer and evolved into one of the most innovative Swiss watch companies in history. Renowned for its pioneering spirit, Eterna introduced several breakthroughs, most notably the 1948 invention of the Eterna-Matic—a self-winding movement with a ball-bearing-mounted rotor that greatly enhanced the durability and efficiency of automatic watches. This innovation not only became an industry standard but also inspired the brand’s iconic five-ball bearing logo. Eterna also played a pivotal role in the creation of ETA SA, the movement supplier that would serve much of the Swiss watch industry.
