Expert Care for Every Clock Style & Collection

The Ave Maria chime was inspired by the famous Catholic prayer and its musical settings, most often Franz Schubert’s 1825 composition, which clockmakers adapted into a melodic sequence for mantel and wall clocks, giving timepieces both a devotional and lyrical character that set them apart from the more secular Westminster and Whittington chimes.

The Bim-Bam chime was inspired by the simplicity of striking tower bells, using a straightforward two-note pattern (often on alternating rods or gongs) to mark the quarters and hours, and it became popular in 19th- and 20th-century European mantel and wall clocks for its clarity, charm, and ease of mechanism compared to more complex melodies.

The St. Michael’s chime was inspired by the bells of St. Michael’s Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where the melody was installed in the church tower clock in the 1760s; it was later adapted for use in domestic chiming clocks, giving owners a distinctive alternative to the more common Westminster sequence.

The Westminster chime was inspired by a set of four notes from Handel’s Messiah (“I Know That My Redeemer Liveth”) and was arranged in the late 18th century for the clock at St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge; it later gained worldwide fame when installed in London’s Palace of Westminster in 1859, which is why it became known as the Westminster chime.

The Whittington chime was inspired by the bells of the Church of St. Mary le Bow in London, and its name is linked to the legend of Dick Whittington, a poor boy who became Lord Mayor of London after hearing the church bells calling him back to the city; the melody was later adapted into clock chimes as an alternative to Westminster, offering a richer and more varied sequence.

HISTORY OF CHIMING CLOCKS

The Legacy of Chiming Clocks: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Chiming clocks trace their origins to medieval Europe, where church tower clocks of the 14th century were equipped with striking mechanisms to sound the hours on bells, both to mark time for communities and to signal religious observances. By the 17th century, domestic longcase and bracket clocks adopted musical chimes, evolving from simple hour strikes to elaborate quarter-hour melodies like the Westminster chime, first used at St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge, in the late 1700s. As clockmaking advanced through the 18th and 19th centuries, makers in England, Germany, France, and later the United States refined chiming mechanisms, incorporating multiple melodies, intricate hammers, and gongs.

These innovations not only added utility but also artistry, transforming clocks into symbols of craftsmanship and cultural prestige that remain cherished in both antique and modern horology.
