We specialize in repairing popular Grana collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The Grana Chronograph was inspired by the growing military demand for precise timing instruments during World War II, particularly for pilots and officers who relied on accurate chronographs for navigation and mission coordination. Built with a slim 38.4 mm case, gilt dial, and powered by the Venus 175 column-wheel movement, it reflected both functional necessity and Swiss craftsmanship, balancing rugged reliability with elegant design. Its specific use by the Hungarian Air Force highlights its role as a tool watch created to meet wartime aviation requirements, where split-second measurement was vital, making it both a product of its era and a symbol of Grana’s technical capability.

The Grana Dirty Dozen watch was inspired by the British Ministry of Defence’s urgent need during World War II for durable, highly legible, and standardized wristwatches that could withstand the harsh conditions of military service. Known officially as “W\.W.W.” for “Watch, Wrist, Waterproof,” the design was stripped of luxury and focused on function, with luminous hands and numerals, a black dial for readability, and a rugged case built to survive battlefield wear. Grana, along with eleven other Swiss manufacturers, answered this call, but due to their smaller production capacity, they made the fewest units—around 1,000 to 1,500—making their Dirty Dozen piece not only a product of military necessity but also the rarest and most coveted symbol of wartime horology.

The Grana Early Civilian watch was inspired by the shift in the early 20th century from pocket watches to wristwatches, as everyday wearers—particularly women—sought smaller, more practical, and fashionable timepieces. When Grana introduced its first complete watches around 1906, many were elegant bracelet and wrist models that combined Swiss mechanical reliability with jewelry-like design, reflecting the era’s growing appetite for wristwatches as both accessories and personal timekeepers. These early civilian pieces showcased Grana’s ambition to move beyond supplying movements into crafting finished watches, laying the foundation for the brand’s later technical innovations and eventual evolution into Certina.

The Grana Shockproof watch was inspired by the increasing demand in the 1930s for more durable wristwatches that could withstand the bumps and jolts of modern life, as people shifted from sedentary lifestyles to more active daily routines and sports. Advances in shock-absorbing technology, such as improved balance staff protection, allowed Grana to create watches marketed as “shockproof,” emphasizing resilience without sacrificing accuracy. These models reflected both a technical innovation and a response to consumer needs, positioning Grana as a forward-thinking brand that bridged practical durability with Swiss watchmaking precision, and paving the way for its later identity under the Certina name.

The Grana Sport watch was inspired by the rising popularity of outdoor activities and the need for rugged, reliable wristwatches in the late 1930s, as society embraced faster transportation, leisure travel, and more physically active lifestyles. Introduced around 1938 to mark Grana’s 50th anniversary, it featured a steel case, water resistance, and shock protection, embodying the era’s push toward sportier, more durable timepieces that could transition from daily wear to demanding environments. This blend of practicality and resilience mirrored broader trends in Swiss watchmaking, where brands sought to appeal to a growing market of consumers who wanted stylish watches capable of handling the challenges of modern life.

HISTORY OF GRANA

The Legacy of Grana: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Grana, founded in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth, began as a small movement maker before introducing its first wristwatches in 1906. The brand earned a reputation for quality with elegant civilian pieces, ladies’ bracelet watches, and innovations like its 1935 shockproof models and the rugged Grana Sport of 1938, which met the era’s demand for durable timepieces.

During World War II, Grana became one of only twelve Swiss firms to supply “W\.W.W.” military watches to the British Army. Its Dirty Dozen model, produced in very limited numbers, remains the rarest and most coveted of the set. By 1939 the company had begun shifting to the Certina name, a transition completed after the war. Though the Grana name eventually disappeared, its watches are still prized for their precision, wartime legacy, and role in shaping Certina’s enduring reputation.
