Its specific use by the Hungarian Air Force highlights its role as a tool watch created to meet wartime aviation requirements, where split-second measurement was vital, making it both a product of its era and a symbol of Grana’s technical capability.

The Grana Dirty Dozen watch was inspired by the British Ministry of Defence’s urgent need during World War II for durable, highly legible, and standardized wristwatches that could withstand the harsh conditions of military service. Known officially as “W\.W.W.” for “Watch, Wrist, Waterproof,” the design was stripped of luxury and focused on function, with luminous hands and numerals, a black dial for readability, and a rugged case built to survive battlefield wear. Grana, along with eleven other Swiss manufacturers, answered this call, but due to their smaller production capacity, they made the fewest units—around 1,000 to 1,500—making their Dirty Dozen piece not only a product of military necessity but also the rarest and most coveted symbol of wartime horology.

The Legacy of Grana: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Grana, founded in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth, began as a small movement maker before introducing its first wristwatches in 1906. The brand earned a reputation for quality with elegant civilian pieces, ladies’ bracelet watches, and innovations like its 1935 shockproof models and the rugged Grana Sport of 1938, which met the era’s demand for durable timepieces.

During World War II, Grana became one of only twelve Swiss firms to supply “W\.W.W.” military watches to the British Army. Its Dirty Dozen model, produced in very limited numbers, remains the rarest and most coveted of the set. By 1939 the company had begun shifting to the Certina name, a transition completed after the war. Though the Grana name eventually disappeared, its watches are still prized for their precision, wartime legacy, and role in shaping Certina’s enduring reputation.
