Expert Care for Every Watch Style & Collection

We specialize in repairing popular Record collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The Record chronograph was inspired by the growing demand in the 1940s and 1950s for precise, reliable tool watches that could serve both professionals and enthusiasts during an era defined by aviation, sports timing, and post-war technical progress. Drawing on Switzerland’s tradition of high-grade chronograph manufacture, Record developed robust designs with clean dials, luminous markers, and sturdy cases, often powered by in-house movements or respected ébauches, to meet the needs of pilots, engineers, and athletes who required accuracy under pressure. This marriage of functionality and style reflected the mid-century fascination with modern engineering, making Record’s chronographs both practical instruments and fashionable symbols of precision.

The Record Datofix was inspired by the mid-20th century fascination with mechanical ingenuity and the growing popularity of “complete calendar” wristwatches that combined practicality with elegance. As people in the 1940s sought wristwatches that could serve as both refined accessories and functional tools, Record answered with the Datofix, a model showcasing day, date, month, and moon-phase in a balanced, visually engaging layout. This design not only reflected the era’s appetite for complication watches that symbolized sophistication and technical mastery but also positioned Record alongside leading Swiss makers who were pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking for everyday wear.

The Record Dirty Dozen watch was inspired by the British Ministry of Defence’s urgent need during World War II for highly legible, durable, and precise wristwatches that could withstand the rigors of combat. Commissioned alongside 11 other Swiss manufacturers, Record designed its military timepiece to strict specifications—black dial, Arabic numerals, luminous hands, sub-seconds dial, and rugged waterproof case—ensuring soldiers had reliable instruments for navigation and coordination in the field. This utilitarian inspiration, rooted in wartime necessity and functionality, ultimately gave birth to one of the most collectible and historically significant military watches ever produced.

The Record Sector watch, introduced at the company’s founding in 1903, was inspired by a desire to break away from conventional round-dial pocket watches by offering a bold, patented design with retrograde hands and a triangular case that visually echoed the precision of technical instruments. Its unusual dial layout, with sector-style displays for hours and minutes, reflected the early 20th century fascination with mechanical innovation and modern aesthetics, appealing to a clientele eager for timepieces that were not only functional but also conversation pieces. This inventive spirit set Record apart from its contemporaries and established its reputation as a brand unafraid to experiment with form and function.

The Record Tridatic was inspired by the company’s pursuit of sophisticated calendar complications during the mid-20th century, when Swiss watchmakers were competing to create practical yet technically impressive wristwatches for professionals and style-conscious consumers. Building on the success of the Datofix, the Tridatic offered a distinctive triple-calendar layout—displaying day, date, and month—in a balanced, elegant format that reflected the era’s fascination with mechanical problem-solving and multifunctional timepieces. Its design was meant to appeal to those who valued both precision and refinement, embodying Record’s ambition to stand alongside the top Swiss brands producing complex, everyday-wearable calendar watches.

HISTORY OF RECORD

The Legacy of Record: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

The Record Watch Company, founded in 1903 in Tramelan, Switzerland, was created by local investors to produce innovative timepieces that stood apart from traditional designs. Its first release was the patented Sector watch, a triangular pocket watch with retrograde hands that captured the era’s fascination with modern engineering. By 1916, the company had merged into the Record Dreadnought Watch Co. S.A., expanding across Switzerland with a London sales office, before returning to its original name in the 1930s.

Record went on to earn recognition for waterproof wristwatches, elegant chronographs, and its renowned Datofix full calendar with moon-phase, while also supplying military watches for Britain’s “Dirty Dozen” in World War II. Acquired by Longines in the early 1960s, the brand was phased out by the 1970s and officially closed in 1991. Today, Record watches remain valued by collectors for their craftsmanship, distinctive style, and contributions to both civilian and military horology.
