The Legacy of Certina: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Certina was founded in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth, who began producing high-quality watch movements in a small family workshop. Originally known as Grana, the company gained recognition for its precision and reliability before adopting the name Certina in 1938, derived from the Latin word certus, meaning “certain.” Under the second generation, Erwin and Hans Kurth, Certina expanded rapidly, becoming one of Switzerland’s largest private watchmakers. In 1959, the brand revolutionized durability with its DS (Double Security) system, introducing enhanced shock and water resistance that defined its identity. Tested in extreme conditions—from the Mariana Trench to Himalayan expeditions—Certina’s watches earned a reputation for toughness and accuracy.

Now part of the Swatch Group and headquartered in Biel/Bienne, Certina continues its legacy with Swiss automatic, quartz, and solar-powered movements, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern innovation.
