We specialize in repairing popular Charles Fasoldt collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The Fasoldt Double-Wheel Lever Watch stands as Charles Fasoldt’s most significant horological achievement, patented in 1859 and celebrated for its ingenious design that dramatically reduced friction and improved precision. Unlike conventional lever escapements, Fasoldt’s system used two escape wheels working in harmony, delivering smoother impulse and greater efficiency to the balance wheel. Each component was hand-fitted and finely adjusted, often revealing Fasoldt’s distinct decorative engraving and superior finishing. Produced in extremely limited numbers in his Albany workshop, these watches combined scientific innovation with artistic mastery, earning Fasoldt recognition as one of the most technically gifted watchmakers of his era and cementing his legacy in early American precision watchmaking.

We know that your Charles Fasoldt watch is important to you and understand that the sentimental value more often than not outweighs the monetary value. Our expert watchmakers strive to make sure your watch can be worn for many years to come.

The Fasoldt Marine Chronometer represented Charles Fasoldt’s ambition to create instruments of uncompromising accuracy for navigation and scientific measurement. Crafted in the mid-19th century, these precision timepieces were designed to maintain exact time at sea, where temperature changes, motion, and humidity could easily disrupt lesser mechanisms. Each chronometer showcased Fasoldt’s meticulous engineering, incorporating his advanced escapement designs and hand-adjusted balance assemblies to ensure reliability under harsh maritime conditions. Built in extremely limited numbers, they demonstrated a rare blend of mechanical ingenuity and artisanal care, rivaling the finest English and Swiss chronometers of the era. Today, surviving examples stand as rare testaments to Fasoldt’s exceptional contribution to both American horology and marine navigation.

The Fasoldt Pocket Watch No. 400 Series represents the pinnacle of Charles Fasoldt’s craftsmanship and innovation, produced during the final phase of his career in Albany in the late 19th century. These watches, often individually numbered and signed, featured his patented double-wheel lever escapement, precision temperature-compensated balance, and exquisite hand-finishing throughout. Every detail—from the finely damascened plates to the delicately engraved bridges and hand-blued screws—reflected Fasoldt’s perfectionism and devotion to horological excellence. Unlike mass-produced American watches of the era, each No. 400 Series piece was entirely handmade, adjusted for superior accuracy, and intended as a masterwork rather than a commercial product. Today, surviving examples are exceptionally rare and revered by collectors as symbols of Fasoldt’s genius—the perfect blend of mechanical brilliance, artistic elegance, and 19th-century American watchmaking at its finest.

The Fasoldt Regulator Clock exemplified Charles Fasoldt’s devotion to precision and craftsmanship, serving as one of the most accurate timekeeping instruments of its day. Built in his Albany workshop during the mid-19th century, these wall regulators were designed for scientific and industrial use—especially in observatories, railroads, and workshops where exact time was essential. Featuring finely jeweled movements, temperature-compensated pendulums, and meticulous hand adjustments, each regulator reflected Fasoldt’s mastery of both mechanical design and aesthetic refinement. Produced in very small quantities, these clocks were not only technical marvels but also works of art, representing the pinnacle of American horological engineering during a period when precision truly defined progress.

The Fasoldt Skeleton Watch is one of Charles Fasoldt’s most visually captivating creations, revealing the intricate beauty of his engineering genius. Handcrafted in his Albany workshop during the mid to late 19th century, these skeletonized timepieces stripped away the plates and excess metal to showcase the heart of his innovation—the double-wheel lever escapement. Every bridge, wheel, and screw was finished by hand, often engraved with delicate patterns that reflected Fasoldt’s artistic flair as much as his mechanical mastery. The open design allowed admirers to observe the synchronized motion of the dual escape wheels and the precise oscillation of the balance, transforming each watch into both a technical demonstration and a work of art. Produced in extremely small numbers, Fasoldt’s skeleton watches remain among the most coveted American timepieces ever made, embodying the fusion of science and artistry that defined his legacy.

HISTORY OF CHARLES FASOLDT

The Legacy of Charles Fasoldt: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Charles Fasoldt was a master German-American watchmaker and inventor born in Dresden in 1819 who became one of the most respected figures in 19th-century American horology. After immigrating to the United States, he established workshops in Rome and later Albany, New York, where he handcrafted precision watches, marine chronometers, and regulators known for their technical innovation and meticulous beauty. In 1859, he patented his famous double-wheel lever escapement, designed to minimize friction and enhance accuracy—a hallmark of his mechanical genius.

Producing only a limited number of pieces, Fasoldt focused on perfection over volume, and his watches, each finished and engraved by hand, are celebrated today for their rarity, engineering brilliance, and their role in elevating early American watchmaking to world-class standards.
