Ernst Benz began with the work of Ernst Benz himself, a Swiss-trained engineer who built precision aviation instruments and chronographs in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on large, highly legible gauges used in aircraft cockpits. His background in instrument making shaped a design philosophy centered on clarity, durability, and bold proportions. After Benz retired, his name and legacy were revived in the early 2000s by new leadership based in Detroit, who transformed his instrument heritage into a full-fledged watch brand. They carried forward his love for oversized cases and easy-to-read layouts, creating mechanical pilot watches and chronographs that echo the look and spirit of mid-century aviation tools.
