HISTORY OF HERMAN VON DER HEYDT

The Legacy of Herman Von Der Heydt: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Herman von der Heydt pocket watches trace their history to Chicago, Illinois, where German-born watchmaker Herman von der Heydt began developing self-winding timepieces in 1883. Seeking to eliminate regular manual winding, he invented a mechanism powered by everyday movement, receiving a U.S. patent in 1884.

Unlike major manufacturers such as Waltham and Elgin, von der Heydt handcrafted his watches individually, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative engineering. With approximately 35 examples believed to have been made, his creations were exceptionally rare. Today, surviving watches are prized for their scarcity, ingenious design, and place in American automatic watchmaking history.
