Expert Care for Every Clock Style & Collection

The Kienzle Vienna clock was inspired by the elegant Vienna regulator clocks that became popular in Austria during the mid-19th century. These clocks were designed to bring the precision and refined appearance of observatory and railway timekeepers into homes and offices, featuring long pendulums, highly visible dials, and beautifully crafted wooden cases. Kienzle adopted this classic Austrian design tradition, combining German engineering with the graceful proportions and timekeeping accuracy that made Vienna regulators some of the most respected wall clocks of their era.

The Kienzle Volksautomatik clock was inspired by the growing popularity of self-winding automatic wristwatches during the 1950s and Kienzle’s desire to create a clock that required minimal user intervention. Introduced in 1956, the Volksautomatik used a weighted rotor that harnessed everyday vibrations and movement to help keep the clock wound, reflecting the postwar fascination with automation, convenience, and modern engineering. Its name, which translates roughly to “People’s Automatic,” emphasized Kienzle’s goal of making innovative self-winding technology accessible to ordinary households.

The Kienzle Westminster clock was inspired by the famous Westminster chime melody associated with the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Westminster chime became a symbol of precision, prestige, and traditional timekeeping, leading clockmakers across Europe to incorporate the melody into their designs. Kienzle adopted this popular chime system to bring the elegance and sound of grand English clocks into homes, combining it with German craftsmanship and reliable mechanical movements.

The Kienzle World Time Clock was inspired by the growing age of international travel, global commerce, and long-distance communication during the early 20th century. Introduced in 1939 and designed by German industrial designer Heinrich Möller, the clock allowed users to view the time in major cities around the world at a glance. Its innovative world-map display reflected the increasing interconnectedness of nations and embodied the modernist design movement’s goal of combining practical functionality with elegant, streamlined aesthetics.

The Kienzle Zodiac Clock was inspired by humanity’s long fascination with astronomy, astrology, and the passage of time through the movements of the heavens. Introduced in the late 1930s and designed by Heinrich Möller, the clock incorporated zodiac symbols into a modern Art Deco design, blending ancient celestial themes with contemporary German styling. Its design reflected the era’s interest in both scientific progress and timeless cosmic symbolism, creating a clock that was as decorative as it was functional.

HISTORY OF KIENZLE CLOCKS

The Legacy of Kienzle Clocks: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Kienzle clocks trace their roots to 1822 when Johannes Schlenker founded a clockmaking business in Germany’s Black Forest region. After Jakob Kienzle joined in 1883, the company grew into one of Germany’s leading clock and watch manufacturers.

Known for reliable timepieces and innovative designs such as the World Time Clock and Volksautomatik, Kienzle earned a reputation for quality German engineering. Today, vintage Kienzle clocks are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship, distinctive designs, and place in German clockmaking history.
