Expert Care for Every Watch Style & Collection

We specialize in repairing popular Lancaster collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The Lancaster ¾ Plate Movement was inspired by evolving American watchmaking trends favoring easier servicing, improved accuracy, and a more refined aesthetic. Unlike the traditional full-plate design, the ¾ plate allowed better visibility of the movement’s inner workings and enabled tighter tolerances around the gear train and balance assembly. This style reflected a shift toward precision engineering and visual appeal, often featuring fine damaskeening and carefully shaped bridges. It marked Lancaster’s effort to modernize its designs in step with leading watchmakers of the time.

The Lancaster “Gilt Movement” Pocket Watches were inspired by the decorative traditions of mid-19th century horology, where gold-toned finishes were used to elevate both the visual appeal and perceived value of a timepiece. These movements featured a warm, gold-colored plating—often on full-plate designs—with intricate engraving or damaskeening that reflected light beautifully. The gilt finish not only added a luxurious look but also helped protect the brass components from oxidation. Lancaster used this approach to attract buyers seeking a blend of technical craftsmanship and ornamental elegance, especially in an era when a watch was as much a personal statement as it was a timekeeping tool.

The Lancaster Grade A was to establish a reputation for precision and reliability in American watchmaking at a time when the industry was still competing with Swiss imports. As the first widely recognized movement from the Lancaster Watch Company, the Grade A was designed as a key-wound, 15-jewel full-plate pocket watch that prioritized durability and consistent timekeeping. It drew on design elements from the earlier Adams & Perry movements but with refinements aimed at commercial viability. The goal was to produce a high-grade, American-made watch that could earn the trust of railroad workers, tradesmen, and professionals—offering solid mechanics without excessive ornamentation. In essence, the Grade A was a watch built to prove Lancaster could manufacture serious timepieces worthy of national attention.

The Lancaster Grade B was inspired by the need to offer a more accessible alternative to the higher-jewel Grade A, without sacrificing the company’s growing reputation for quality. It typically featured fewer jewels—often 7 or 11—but retained the same solid full-plate construction and dependable mechanics. This made it an appealing choice for everyday users who needed a durable watch at a more affordable price. The Grade B balanced cost and performance, allowing Lancaster to reach a broader market during a time when American-made watches were gaining ground against their European counterparts.

The Lancaster Model 1878 was inspired by the growing demand for higher-precision American pocket watches during a time when accuracy and visual refinement were becoming key selling points. Building on the foundation laid by the earlier Grade A, the Model 1878 introduced more decorative elements—like damaskeened plates and finer regulator adjustments—while maintaining a robust movement architecture. It reflected the industry’s shift toward blending function with form, appealing to professionals and enthusiasts who wanted not just reliability but a touch of elegance. The Model 1878 symbolized Lancaster’s ambition to compete with top-tier domestic makers like Waltham and Elgin, showing that Pennsylvania could produce watches of both technical and aesthetic merit.

HISTORY OF LANCASTER

The Legacy of Lancaster: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Lancaster Watch Company was founded in 1877 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, emerging from the remnants of the Adams & Perry Watch Manufacturing Company, which had struggled financially. The company aimed to continue watch production in the same facility and was known for crafting high-quality pocket watches using American-made movements. Though its lifespan was short—shutting down operations by 1886—it played a key role in early American horology and laid the groundwork for the Hamilton Watch Company, which would go on to become one of the most respected names in watchmaking.

Lancaster’s watches are now valued by collectors for their craftsmanship and historical significance as part of America’s 19th-century watchmaking legacy.
