The Legacy of Shinola: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Shinola was founded in 2011 in Detroit, Michigan, by Tom Kartsotis, the founder of Fossil, with a mission to revive American manufacturing and craftsmanship. Named after the defunct shoe polish brand, Shinola quickly gained attention for its assembly of watches using Swiss-made Ronda movements and American-sourced components, positioning itself as a symbol of Detroit’s industrial resurgence. Though some critics challenged its “Made in America” claims due to imported parts, Shinola expanded its offerings to include leather goods, bicycles, and audio equipment.

Today, it’s recognized as a lifestyle brand blending modern design with a nostalgic nod to American heritage and assembly.
