Expert Care for Every Watch Style & Collection

We specialize in repairing popular Cheshire collections. Learn more about the history of these collections:

The Cheshire 1-Dollar 7-Jewel Model was inspired by the late-19th-century push to create a truly affordable American pocket watch, mirroring the national movement toward low-cost, stamped-part designs pioneered by Waterbury and perfected by Ingersoll. Cheshire set out to prove that even a very simple, economical movement could still offer everyday reliability, building a watch that ordinary workers could buy without the high prices associated with Waltham or Elgin.

We know that your Cheshire watch is important to you and understand that the sentimental value more often than not outweighs the monetary value. Our expert watchmakers strive to make sure your watch can be worn for many years to come.

The Cheshire 3/4-Plate Economy Model was inspired by the desire to offer a step up from their ultra-budget watches while still keeping production costs low, blending the familiar American 3/4-plate layout with simplified stamped components. This design allowed Cheshire to appeal to buyers who wanted a watch that looked more like the mid-grade pieces from Waltham or Elgin but remained inexpensive enough for everyday use.

The Cheshire Full-Plate Low-Cost Model was inspired by the classic American full-plate pocket watches that dominated the mid- to late 1800s, so Cheshire tried to mimic the visual style of those larger, more traditional movements while still using stamped, economical parts to keep the price down. It allowed budget-minded buyers to own a watch that looked like the respected full-plate pieces from Waltham or Hampden, even though it was built with simpler construction meant for affordability rather than high-grade performance.

The Cheshire Nickel-Plated Model was inspired by the growing popularity of brighter, more refined-looking nickel movements that companies like Elgin and Waltham were producing in the late 1800s, so Cheshire adopted nickel plating as a way to make their low-cost watches appear more upscale. The goal was simple: give budget buyers a pocket watch that looked modern and higher grade, even though the underlying movement was still built with economical stamped parts, creating affordable elegance during a time when visual appeal mattered almost as much as performance.

The Cheshire Stem-Wind Model was inspired by the industry-wide shift from key-wound watches to the more modern and convenient stem-wind, stem-set system that became popular in the late 1800s. As competitors like Elgin, Waltham, and Hampden moved toward keyless works, Cheshire introduced its own simplified stem-wind design to stay relevant and offer buyers a watch that functioned like the newer, higher-grade models of the era—but still at a budget-friendly price.

HISTORY OF 88 RUE DU RHONE

The Legacy of 88 Rue Du Rhone: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Cheshire Watch Company operated in Cheshire, Connecticut, from about 1883 to 1901, rising during America’s push to produce low-cost, mass-market pocket watches that could compete with Ingersoll’s dollar-watch movement and the inexpensive models coming from larger factories like Waterbury. The company focused on simplified, economical movements assembled with stamped parts, allowing them to sell watches at very low prices, but this same strategy ultimately led to its downfall: intense competition, shrinking margins, and rapidly improving technology from bigger manufacturers made it difficult for Cheshire to keep pace.

By the early 1900s, the company ceased production, leaving behind a modest legacy as one of the many smaller New England firms that helped transition American watchmaking toward truly affordable everyday timepieces.
