What is harder to see is whether it is working well. “Running” and “healthy” aren’t the same thing, and your watch can’t text you when the difference starts to matter.
Bifora was a German watchmaker that stopped production decades ago. Every Bifora out there is a genuine piece of vintage horology, which sounds romantic until you realize it also means it’s running on lubricants that are probably older than some of the people reading this article. There are no new parts rolling off a factory floor. What exists is what exists, and that supply is slowly shrinking.
That’s why understanding the gap between “it works” and “it’s well” matters so much for this particular brand.

The mechanical escapement inside your Bifora watch is kind of a stubborn little miracle. It will keep functioning long after it should have been serviced, the way some people keep running on caffeine and willpower well past the point where a reasonable person would have taken a nap.
The escapement just needs enough mainspring tension to drive the gear train and keep the escape wheel engaging the pallet fork. That’s it. It doesn’t need fresh oil. It doesn’t need clean bearings. It just needs the basic geometry to still work.
This is great news if you enjoy the illusion that everything is fine. It’s less great news for the actual health of your movement.
Most people treat “is it running?” as their primary diagnostic. Ticking equals healthy. Not ticking equals broken. In reality, the sequence is almost the opposite: damage accumulates while the watch is still running, and by the time it finally stops, the window for easy preventive maintenance has already closed. The watch stops after the damage, not before it.
What Lubrication Actually Does in a Vintage Movement
Fresh watch oil does 2 things: it reduces friction between metal surfaces, and it carries away the tiny debris that normal wear produces. Without it, those metal surfaces grind against each other directly. At watch-movement scales, with components cycling thousands of times per hour, that’s a recipe for accelerated wear.
Old watch oil doesn’t just dry up and leave things as they were. It oxidizes, absorbs moisture, and turns into a gummy residue. That residue creates drag, messes with the escapement’s timing, and traps debris right up against the surfaces it was supposed to protect. It’s like if your car’s motor oil turned into peanut butter. The engine might still turn over, but you wouldn’t call it a good situation.
A Bifora that’s been stored for decades, or one that’s been running for 10-plus years without service, almost certainly has lubricant that’s well past its useful life. The watch may be ticking. It is not being protected.
The Wear You Can’t See
Inside the movement, gear arbors end in tiny shafts called pivots. These rotate inside jewel bearings. These are typically synthetic ruby or sapphire inserts that provide a hard, low-friction surface. The smallest pivots in a vintage wristwatch can be thinner than a human hair. Not metaphorically. Actually thinner than a hair.
When lubrication fails, the pivot spins directly against the jewel with no protective film. The jewel is extremely hard and holds up well. The pivot, being steel, starts to thin. This produces no sound, no visible sign, no warning notification of any kind. The watch just keeps running while the pivot gradually wears down.
Eventually, under load, a thinned pivot can’t stay seated in its jewel. The failure, when it comes, is sudden rather than gradual.
This problem isn’t unique to Bifora. Owners of other discontinued brands know this story well. A movement grinding along on degraded lubricants or worn components shows lower amplitude because friction in the system is eating the energy that should be driving the balance wheel through its full range.
From the outside, you can’t see this. The seconds hand moves. The watch keeps time, though often with growing inconsistency as amplitude continues to drop. A professional watch repair technician with the right equipment can measure amplitude and identify a movement that’s running below its healthy range before visible damage has occurred.
That’s the value of periodic inspection to check in on a watch that appears to be running normally. A Bifora showing reasonable timekeeping and no obvious symptoms can still be well below healthy operating amplitude. That’s a condition that responds well to cleaning and fresh lubrication but becomes harder to address once wear on the pivots or escapement components has progressed.
Why This Matters More for a Discontinued Brand
Watch repair for a still-running vintage movement is fundamentally different from repairing one that has already worn past the point of no return. When the only work needed is a thorough cleaning and fresh lubrication, the original components stay intact. The pivots are preserved. The jewels are preserved. The watch comes out of service the same watch it went in.
Continued running without service pushes wear past the threshold where originals can be saved. At that point, you’re not maintaining a watch anymore. You’re restoring one, and for a brand like Bifora, whose parts supply is finite and slowly disappearing, restoration is a materially harder and more expensive proposition than maintenance ever was.
If comparable modern parts aren’t available, you rely largely on finding an old watch to cannibalize for parts, or you need a skilled watchmaker who can make tiny new parts to the exact measurements needed for the tiny machine inside your watch. Neither of those is a quick or inexpensive option.
For collectors, there’s also the question of historical integrity. A watch with all its original components is simply not the same object as one where wear has forced replacements, regardless of how well the replacement work was done.
Early service keeps that distinction intact. Waiting doesn’t.
The Upshot
Your Bifora ticking is a good sign. It means you’ve got something worth taking care of. But “running” is a pretty low bar, and a watch that clears it isn’t necessarily telling you everything is fine. It’s just telling you it hasn’t stopped yet.
The difference between a maintained watch and an eventual massive restoration project often comes down to timing. Catch it early, and the original movement comes through intact. Wait until something actually fails, and you’re dealing with a parts search for a brand that stopped making parts decades ago.
A watch that’s both running and healthy is a considerably better thing to own than one that’s merely running.
