The CWC G10 Quartz watch was to provide the British Army with a durable, accurate, and easy-to-maintain general service timepiece that met the evolving needs of modern military operations. Introduced in 1980, the G10 replaced earlier mechanical models with a Swiss quartz movement for superior precision and reliability in the field. Designed to strict Ministry of Defence standards, it featured a tough stainless steel case, fixed lugs for NATO straps, a legible matte black dial with luminous markers, and a simple, functional layout. Its utilitarian design, low maintenance, and affordability made it ideal for mass issue to British forces, cementing its reputation as one of the most iconic military watches of the late 20th century.

The CWC Mellor-72 was to faithfully recreate the early 1970s mechanical general service watch originally supplied to British forces, capturing the essence of CWC’s first military-issued timepieces. Named after Ray Mellor, the company’s founder, and the year 1972 when CWC was established, the Mellor-72 pays homage to the utilitarian design of the original hand-wound models used by soldiers before the quartz era. Built to vintage MOD specifications, it features a slim case, fixed lugs for NATO straps, a clear matte dial with luminous markers, and a reliable mechanical movement—offering a nostalgic yet functional tribute to CWC’s earliest contribution to British military horology.

The CWC RAF Pilot’s Chronograph was to equip Royal Air Force pilots with a reliable, mission-specific timekeeping instrument that combined precision, durability, and functionality for use in cockpit environments. Introduced in the 1980s and powered by the hand-wound Valjoux 7760 movement, this chronograph was built to strict Ministry of Defence standards and featured an asymmetrical stainless steel case for crown protection, high-contrast subdials for legibility, and precise timing functions essential for navigation and flight coordination. It was designed not as a luxury item but as a critical piece of military equipment—optimized for visibility, manual reliability, and resilience in the demanding conditions of aerial operations.

The CWC Royal Navy Diver watch was rooted in the British Ministry of Defence’s need for a rugged, highly legible, and water-resistant timepiece capable of withstanding the extreme conditions faced by Royal Navy divers. When CWC took over production from Rolex and Omega in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the design followed strict MOD specifications, emphasizing functionality over luxury. The watch featured a robust stainless steel case with fixed bars, a high-visibility dial with tritium lume, and a reliable automatic ETA movement. Its no-nonsense construction and military utility were tailored specifically for underwater operations, making it a tool watch in the purest sense—built for performance, not prestige.

The CWC SBS Diver watch was to create a mission-ready timepiece specifically for the British military’s elite Special Boat Service (SBS)—a naval special forces unit known for high-risk amphibious operations. Developed in the late 1980s, this watch needed to meet the demanding requirements of covert underwater missions, including exceptional durability, water resistance, and legibility in low-light conditions. Built with a tough stainless steel case, fixed bars, a screw-down crown, and luminous markers (originally with tritium), the SBS Diver was engineered to MOD specifications and issued only to select personnel. Its stealthy matte finish and functional design reflect a pure focus on performance and survivability, making it one of the most respected tool watches in military horology.

HISTORY OF CWC

The Legacy of CWC: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

Cabot Watch Company (CWC) was founded in 1972 by British entrepreneur Ray Mellor to supply high-quality, reliable timepieces to the British military. Named after the explorer John Cabot, the company quickly gained contracts with the UK Ministry of Defence, producing robust mechanical and quartz watches for the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and British Army. CWC became particularly well known for its military-issue divers, pilots’, and general service watches, many of which adhered strictly to NATO specifications. Iconic models like the CWC Royal Navy Diver and G10 quartz have become prized among collectors for their no-nonsense design, durability, and historical significance.

Still operating today, CWC continues to produce both vintage reissues and modern military-style timepieces, maintaining its legacy as a trusted name in British military horology.
