The Legacy of Burlington: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

The Burlington Watch Company, established in Chicago around 1908, gained recognition for selling high-quality pocket watches directly to consumers through mail-order catalogs, making fine timepieces more affordable to the public. Rather than manufacturing its own movements, Burlington partnered with the Illinois Watch Company of Springfield, which produced customized “Burlington Special” movements exclusively for them. These watches were known for their precision, durability, and railroad-grade standards, often featuring 19 to 21 jewels. Burlington’s installment-based sales approach democratized access to quality watches during the early 20th century.

The company thrived through the 1910s but declined by the mid-1920s as direct sales models and market competition evolved, leaving behind a legacy of accessible American craftsmanship.
