HISTORY OF NEWARK WATCH CO.

The Legacy of Newark Watch Co.: A History of Precision, Style and Innovation

The Newark Watch Company, founded in 1864 in Newark, New Jersey, was one of America’s earliest watch manufacturers and a pioneer in the development of stem-winding pocket watches. Closely associated with inventor Arthur Wadsworth and his patented keyless winding system, the company helped modernize timekeeping by replacing traditional key-wound designs with more practical stem-winding mechanisms.

Although the company operated for only a few years before becoming the Cornell Watch Company in 1869, it played an important role in the early American watch industry. Today, Newark pocket watches are prized by collectors for their rarity, innovative engineering, and significance in American horological history.
